Chapter
Two
The next couple of days went pretty regularly for Danielle-Rachelle. She
hung out with friends, went to work, the usual busy summer stuff.
"Danni-Rae," said Channing. Practically everyone called her
that. It was Thursday. Almost a week since she had seen Zac. She had
tried not to think too much about him. She liked him...a lot. But she
didn't want to get her hopes up on something that might never happen.
Danni-Rae woke up.
It was six forty-two in the morning. Her parents had surely already left
to work. AJ was still, most-likely asleep. Danni-Rae sat up.
"What, baby?" she asked sleepily. He climbed onto her bed.
"Let's watch T.B.," said Channing. He couldn't quite pronounce
a "v". Danni-Rae groaned. She stood up, slipped into her
slippers, picked Channing up, and walked downstairs. She put her brother
down. She turned the T.V. on and put it on cartoons and walked to the
kitchen. The table and counter were a mess. Dishes were stacked by the
sink. The stove was dirty. "Uh! Having parents who're workaholics
sucks!" she thought to herself. "I guess it's time to
clean." She cleaned the house. By the time she was done, she had
to wake AJ up so she could get ready for work.
"AJ, wake up!" Danielle said hitting him hard on his back. He
grunted.
"I AM up," he said.
"Alright. You better have breakfast on the table before I get
downstairs," said Dannie-Rae. She nudged him and was off to her
room. She grabbed her clothes for the day. It took her thirty minutes to
shower. When she was done, she got dressed, brushed her teeth, her hair,
washed her face, put lotion on, a very small amount of make-up, and she
grabbed her shoes and socks and headed downstairs.
When she got downstairs, Channing was running back and forth in the
living room. She sighed and walked to the kitchen. AJ stood at the stove
scrambling eggs. "Hey," Danni-Rae said. She sat down at
the table. She pulled on her socks and shoes.
"Hey," said AJ. He turned to face her. "You want it for
here or to go?"
"Here's fine. I don't really care about going to work today,"
said Danielle.
"Don't go," said AJ. He put a plate of eggs, sausage, and
beans in front of her. He sat down across from her.
"Oh, yeah because I have all the money that I'll need for
school," said Danni-Rae, sarcastically. AJ said nothing. Danni-Rae
stood up, walked over to their pantry, took out a bag of tortillas,
walked over to the stove, turned it on low, and put two tortillas on the
burner.
"I would have done that, you know?" said AJ.
"It's okay," Danni-Rae replied. "So how goes college
life?"
"Well, I have a paper due today and I have to read three chapters
of this really boring book," said AJ. He was minoring in
engineering at a local community college. She turned the tortillas over.
"I'll be back by two," said Danielle.
"Mom's going to be here early today," said AJ.
"Oh. Then I might meet up with Mary or something. Don't wait up
for me," said Danni-Rae. Danielle-Rachelle turned off the stove,
grabbed her tortillas, and sat down at the table. She began to eat.
"Alright," said AJ.
"When she finished eating, she kissed Channing good bye and got
into her 1998 Honda. She drove to work. When she got to the coffee shop
she worked at, she put on her apron and walked in through the back. She
said hi to her manager, Dan and some colleagues, then walked into the
cleaning closet, grabbed a towel, filled a bucket up with soapy water
and began to bus tables.
Danielle-Rachelle's first break was at eleven forty-five. She sat down
at a table. It wasn't too crowded now that the morning rush was over.
She was facing the opposite direction of the door. Danielle was playing
with the wrapper of a straw. Danni-Rae watched as customers went to the
counter and ordered. Then, she saw him. Zac stood at the counter and
ordered. She watched him. When he turned around, Danni-Rae stood up and
tried to hide her face. She didn't even know why. She didn't know why
she didn't want him to see her, but she didn't. Or maybe, she did. She
tried walking back behind the counter undetected, but it was no use. He
had seen her.
"Hey, uh, you're Danielle-Rachelle, right?" asked Zac.
Danielle turned and faced him. He was wearing red track pants, a white
wifebeater, and a red track jacket.
"Oh, umm, yeah," she said. Her shoulders rose up a little, she
made back and forth motions with her heel in the air, and she looked up
at him from under her eyebrows. There was an awkward silence.
"So, you work here?" asked Zac. She nodded, then jammed her
hands into her pockets. She shrugged.
"Yeah," Danni-Rae said. "Sadly." He smiled.
"So, how 'bout that cup of coffee?" he asked.
"Oh, umm, sorry. My break's over. I gotta get back to work,"
she said.
"Oh, okay. cool. I guess I'll uh...see you around," Zac said.
"Yeah. I really am sorry," said Danni-Rae. He nodded, then
they went their separate ways. "Uh! I just screwed up so bad!"
she thought to herself.
